Title: History of the National Flag of the United States of America
Medium: book
Main author(s): Schuyler Hamilton
Language: English
Edition (publisher: place): Scholarly Publishing Office, University of Michigan Library: (unknown location) (United States)
Edition date: 2006 (no edition specified; presumably first)
Previous edition: [hlu53]
Catalogue codes: ISBN 1-4255-0815-4 = ISBN 978-1-4255-0815-9 (see WorldCat entry)
Pages: 120
Format: 8⁤⁹⁄₁₆×5⁤¼(×⁵⁄₁₆)″
Weight: 6 ℥

I have in hand a paperback, recently acquired, titled History of the national flag of the United States of America. Total pages of the original is 115. This is a photoreprint of the 1852 book [hlu53] (Lippincott, Grambo, and Co.) by «Captain by Brevet U.S.A.», Schuyler Hamilton.

On the front cover is a logo of the University of Michigan, University Library. On the back cover is «The Michigan Historical Reprint Series, Reprints from the collection of the University of Michigan University Library». The barcode on the back cover reads "9781425508159" for the ISBN.

Bob Hunt, 06 Sep 2007

All of the printed pages save one are from the original book, including all numbered pages, titling pages, oddball pages which have some publishing info, and a normally blank page with a hand-written inscription regarding the original owner (and date) of this volume. There are a few blank pages at the very end, not identified as to source. The very last page is added, and contains this info: «Made in the U.S.A.»
Bob Hunt, 06 Sep 2007

What is the publishing date, either 1852 or 1853? The facsimile on line says 1853 but quoted library catalogues say 1852.
António Martins, 07 Sep 2007

Both. I’ve now laid eyes on scanned copies with a plain (text only) title page with 1852 (reference AGV2901) and scanned copies with an ornate title page with the date 1853 (at Google Book Search).
Jon Radel, 07 Sep 2007

Indeed, it has two title pages, with different years on it. The text, as far as I can see offers only the clue that the contemporary stars and stripes has 31 stripes, meaning the definite text dates 4 july 1851 or later. But I wouldn’t know if something especially flag-related happend in 1852/3, so I have no way to date the content more precisely.

Still, on a later page it also says: «Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1852, by LIPPINCOTT, GRAMBO, AND CO., in the Office of the Clerk of the District Court of the United States in and for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.» I think I’d side with the librarians that used 1852.

Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 07 Sep 2007
