White and blue are traditional colors used in Mexico since early colonial times in religious festivities. White-blue flags charged with either a depiction of Virgin Mary or that of the eagle and snake were flown by the very first rebels led by Hidalgo going back to September 1810.
One battle flag is this plain white and blue checkered flag without an emblem used by French privateer Louis-Michel Aury to annex Amelia Island in September 1817. Another flag is this white and blue checkered flag with an eagle.
