![]() Washington Irving described the flag carried by the warriors of Hell-Gate as "Three Devil's Darning Needles, volant, in a flame-colored field." This refers to a locality to the east of Manhattan, across the narrow tidal strait (Hell-Gate) in the East River. Explorers found navigation hazardous in this New World place of rocks and converging tide-driven currents. By the late 19th century, hundreds of ships had sunk in the strait. |
