The council informed me their coat of arms was adopted in October 1967, being designed by Prof. Miguel Ángel Herrera Bravo. They also informed me there was no process of adoption; it was by his motive. The coat of arms has a border composed of leaves, many not connected. At the top is a ribbon that reads "CARDENAS S.L.P.". The shield is composed of four sections, having one at the top, two in the middle, and one at the bottom with a triangle that goes into the central sections.
The upper section depicts three species of fossils, found in the vicinity of the town and representing prehistory. The central-left section depicts an arm holding a bow and arrow, an Indian. To its right, a cross and the year 1607 is seen. Under this, an Indian warrior and a petroglyph is seen; this marks the evangelization by the friars Juan Bautista Mollinedo and Juan Cárdenas and the pre-Hispanic history. The central-right section depicts a chain (above) for slavery in the haciendas; and the years 1613 which is when Luis de Cárdenas was granted the land, a cob of corn for agriculture, and a cow head for cattle-raising. The lower section depicts the sun emerging in its point from behind the mountains. The lower-left depicts a train leaving a hill and the year 1890, when the first train was inaugurated through the land here. The lower-right depicts a scroll that reads "MUNICIPIO LIBRE" [FREE MUNICIPALITY] and the year 1920, when it became a municipality.
