The SYMADREM [website: www.symadrem.fr] is the interregional joint association for the development of the dikes of the Rhône delta and the sea; this public body brings together six inter-municipal structures and a department. Members are the Bouches-du-Rhône department, the Aix Marseille Provence metropolis, the Arles Crau Camargue Montagnette urban community, the Nîmes Métropole urban community, the Terre de Camargue community of communes, the Beaucaire Terre d’Argence community of communes and the Petite Camargue community of communes.
Its mission is to manage aquatic environments and prevent flooding. Its scope of competence covers that of its members within the territory known as the “Greater Rhône Delta”. It operates on 220 km of river dikes and 30 km of maritime structures (sea dikes, groynes, breakwaters and tenons). Twenty municipalities are protected by the dikes: Aigues-Mortes, Aimargues, Arles, Beaucaire, Beauvoisin, Bellegarde, Fontvieille, Fourques, Le Cailar, Le Grau-du-Roi, Maussane-les-Alpilles, Mouriès, Paradou, Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, Saint-Etienne-du-Grès, Saint-Gilles, Saint-Laurent-d’Aigouze, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Tarascon and Vauvert. Four other municipalities fall within its scope of intervention: Boulbon, Saint-Martin-de-Crau, Saint-Pierre-de-Mézoargues, and Vallabrègues.
The seat of the Symadrem is in Arles.
