Rodewisch probably existed since around 1200 and was first mentioned in 1411. Around 1600 a hammer mill was established. The village merged with minor entities in 1856 and gained the status of a market town. City rights were gained in 1924. Since the 19th century textiles industry had been the main business line. Playing at skittles is still very popular in the city. A red cloth is the 1st prize of an annual tournament. The skittles before had been golden at least until 1989.
