Coat of Arms

[COA of Tysfjord] image by Tomislav Šipek, 10 December 2015

Blazon: I sølv en oppvoksende svart hummer. In English: Argent a lobster sable issuant from the based.
Approved by the royal resolution of 24 July 1987 after a drawing by Esther Skoglund. [c2j88]
The municipal web site explains that the originally adopted design showed Stetind mountain, but was not approved by the State Archives.
The lobster was chosen because Tysfjord is the northernmost location of lobster habitat. The original drawing included the claws of different size, such as they are in the natural population of lobsters in Tysfjord, but the State Archives opted for the same size claws (as per heraldic conventions).

Status of the flag

On January 1, 2020, the new municipality of Narvik was created by merging the former Narvik Muncipality, Ballangen Municipality and the eastern half of Tysfjord Municipality. The new symbols are presented on the Narvik page.

Hamarøy Municipality merged with the remaining part of Tysfjord Municipality, all to be known as Tysfjord Municipality.
