According to [fia07b], on 1997 (August 15), FIAV awarded the Vexillon to Aleš Brozek (sic!), for «for the most important contribution to vexillology» in 1996-1997.
António Martins, 23 Jan 2008

Aleš Brožek started to compile flag book bibliographies in 1982. At the beginning he excerpted bibliographic data from national bibliographies, library catalogues and lists received from flag book collectors, nowadays he benefits from the largest database called WorldCat with more than 85 million bibliographic records in more than 10,000 libraries worldwide.

He mimeographed and distributed his first flag book and chart bibliography for 1979-1981 by himself in January 1983, the 1st version for 1982 appeared in August 1983 succeeded by the 2nd version in November 1983, the 1st version for 1983 in May 1984 and the 2nd version for 1983 in January 1985.

In 1985 Dr. Günter Mattern reprinted the 2nd version for 1983 in his famous Flaggenmitteilungen [fml], and continued the dissemination of these bibliographies up to 1992 in the following issues:

1983
Flaggenmitteilungen 107 (8 March 1985) [brz85a]
1984
Flaggenmitteilungen 113 (6 October 1985) [brz85b]
1985
Flaggenmitteilungen 139 (4 January 1988) [brz88]
1986
Flaggenmitteilungen 140 (8 February 1988) [brz88a]
1987
Flaggenmitteilungen 150 (9 December 1988) [brz88b]
1979-1987 (suppl.)
Flaggenmitteilungen 157 (26 December 1989) [brz89]
1988 + 1979-1987 (suppl.)
Flaggenmitteilungen 164 (1 May 1990) [brz90]
1989
Flaggenmitteilungen 172 (3 May 1991) [brz91a]
1990
Flaggenmitteilungen 185 (29 May 1992) [brz92a]

The following flag book collectors helped the compiler:

Because of the extreme grow of flag books and charts worldwide in the last decades, the compiler created a special database containing the bibliographic data on vexillological books at the end of 1994. The database was “fed” with the data on vexillological books published from 1979 since 1995. It has been maintained and nowadays it contains the bibliographic data of nearly 4300 documents published between 1976 and 2007 which allows to produce statistics and tables.
