Flags to be used by sailing ships

Jean Randier, in his book Grands Voiliers Français, gives the standard inventory of a sailing ship having to pass Cape Horn. In the steering items, flags are mentioned between the sidelamps and the steering gear's beels, as:
- three French ensigns (one brand new, two used);
- one flag with the ship's name;
- one Chilean ensign;
- one pilot flag (similar to signal "H" of the international code, "I have a pilot on board");
- one set of international signal flags.
The cost of the cumbersome but essential book on the international code of signals, giving the meanings of the 17,000 possible combinations of signals, was borne by the captain, saving the shipowner's money.
