Palestinian Flag Variant With Heart

[Palestinian Flag Variant With Heart] image by Eugene Ipavec, 24 June 2010

An odd Palestinian flag or flag-like object showed up at the funerals of the Turkish Gaza-flotilla casualties in Istanbul in an Yahoo news photo (caption: "A stylized Palestinian flag altered to have a heart on it flies above the crowds attending the funeral of a victim of the Israeli naval commandos raid at the Beyazit mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, Friday June 4 2010.")
The heart apparently replaces the hoist triangle.

The national flag of Palestine with the plea "Free Palestine" centered within the red triangle-shaped canton at the flag's left-hoist side, with a drawing of an androgynous "protester's face" hidden behind a black/white chainlink-pattern keffiyeh (scarf) on the middle white stripe (at the fly side). Unlike the usual national flag, here the widths of the stripes are not proportionally equal (undoubtedly to give the facial portrait a more enlarged visibility).

The national flag of Palestine, but with the white word "FREE" appearing in the red-triangle canton (at the left hoist side) and in black "PALESTINE" on the middle white stripe, with apparently its creator and promoter's name: "Islamic Human Rights Commission" [IHRC] (based in Wembley, UK) at the lower right green stripe on the fly side. This flag came with a white plastic flagpole for attachment on a car window.

This variant is a white horizontal background featuring the al-Aqsa Mosque, a raising hand holding the Palestinian flag, accompanied by the depiction of late Qasem Soleimani and below the inscription in red capitals "FREE PALESTINE".

Esteban Rivera, 15 November 2024

I originally believed that the red Farsi slogan above his head read (from right-to-left): "al-Quran" (Islam's Holy Book) — as that is what it seems to resemble: القرآن . But it is rather unusual just to see that phrase floating above Gen. Solemani's head without any explanation as to why or lacking reference to the other images. In other Islamist flags the designer will depict an opened book with the words "al-Quran" on its pages.

This flag shows the golden "Dome of the Rock" (Arabic: قبة الصخرة, romanized: "Qubbat aṣ-Ṣaḵra") that sits atop the "Temple Mount"— but the lettering does not match the letters above Gen. Soleimani's head.
This Dome sits atop the "Temple Mount" or "The Noble Sanctuary" (Arabic: الحرم الشريف, "Haram al-Sharif") — but this lettering does not match either.
The "Furthest Mosque" (from Mecca) المسجد الأقصى, "al-Masjid al-Aqṣā") — does not match either.
"Free Palestine" is فلسطين الحرة — doesn't match either (but the "n" does match).
"al-Quds" (Jerusalem) is اَلْـقُـدْس (which has no "dot" above the far left letter) and which similarly looks like "al-Quran" القرآن (which has a "dot" above the far left letter, meaning it is an Arab/Farsi "n" — the last letter in al-Quran when read from right-to-left.

Upon reflection, I think this flag's artist mistakenly placed a "dot" above the Farsi "n". Or the flag's artist is using a "flowery" or "flourishing" Farsi script that does read "al-Quds." Or the artist used a Farsi "Spell Checker" that accidentally switched the words — something that I am sure we all have embarrassingly experienced, too. But I am leaning to: "al-Quds". Muslims use "al-Quds" to refer to "Jerusalem" where the golden dome/Sakra sits atop the Mount/Sharif in Jerusalem. I think the artist just mistakenly mis-spelled "al-Quds" by placing a "dot" above the Arabic/Farsi "n" letter. So, the phrase above Soleimani's head must read (or should): "al-Quds" — especially when one remembers that he was the commander of the Iranian "Quds Force" that envisioned capturing the Sakra dome and Jerusalem (al-Quds) from Israeli control, and their "al-Quds" (Jerusalem) is their capital city in their futuristic "Free Palestine". Yes, my eyes see the obvious "al-Quran" Arabic/Farsi spelling, but nonetheless my mind thinks "al-Quds" would be more logical. And the guy holding the Palestinian flag is holding it UPSIDE DOWN !!!

Regarding this flag, Esteban noted that this golden dome is called the "Al-Aqsa Mosque" — it is not. Instead, as I mentioned above, this golden "Dome of the Rock" is the "Qubbat aṣ-Ṣaḵra" shrine that protects a stone ("as-Sakra") that Muslims believe that their prophet Mohammad placed a ladder upon to climb into Heaven, spoke with other prophets, then climbed back down to mount his flying horse "al-Buraq" to fly back overnight to Mecca, Arabia — an event called the "Night Journey" or "Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj". The "Al-Aqsa Mosque" has a gray/grey-colored dome and is a prayer hall (mosque) located about 200 meters south of this golden as-Sakra Dome shrine. And there are other, but much smaller, domed shrines atop the Mount also.

Furthermore, the hand holding this flag has a finger pointing skywards towards Heaven — which is a typical Islamist pose.

My contact in Tehran just provided me with a translation of the red Farsi slogan atop Gen. Soleimani's head. It reads: "Al-Qodso Lana" meaning "Jerusalem is ours", which implies: "Jerusalem belongs to Muslim control.

Turkish-Palestinian Solidarity Flag

[Turkish-Palestinian Solidarity Flag] image by Željko Heimer and Eugene Ipavec, 13 Jun 2009

About six months ago, Turkish PM Erdogan had a heated exchange with Israeli president Peres at the Davos summit over the then in-progress Gaza war. Erdogan left Davos in a huff immediately thereafter; CNN carried live footage of the PM arriving back home, where his plane was met on the tarmac by a cheering throng of supporters waving Turkish flags and a number of Palestinian flags with the Turkish star and crescent added to the hoist triangle.. From the looks of them, they weren't homemade.
Eugene Ipavec, 13 Jun 2009

Considering the origin of the four-color Pan-Arab flag, which was anti-Ottoman in its inception, this hybrid is interesting. But the crescent-and-star emblem symbolizes informally Islam as much as it symbolizes Turkey, to the extent of some actual flags using this same combination, like the Western Sahara flag.

Joint Palestine-Lebanon flag

[Joint Palestine-Lebanon flag] image located by William Garrison, 6 December 2023

A conjoined Palestine-Lebanon flag with the Arabic slogan: "We Are All With the Resistance" as seen in an Egyptian "Lawyer's Union" demonstration against Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon in 2006 and against U.S. support for Israel, in Cairo, Egypt; c. 5 August 2006. This "resistance" flag was touted to show Arab solidarity against Israel's then on-going July 2006 military activity in Lebanon and Israel's continued encasement of the Gaza Strip, even though Israel had evacuated all Israeli settlements from Gaza during September 2005. The apparent two-flag joint "resistance" association was that as Israel had evacuated ("been forced out of") Gaza, so Israel would soon be expelled from southern Lebanon (and the Arabs' hope: from Palestine, too). The flags were apparently distributed in Cairo by the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt.

We will pray in Jerusalem flag

[We will pray in Jerusalem flag] image located by William Garrison, 18 February 2024

A flag of Palestine with on its white middle stripe the black-letter Arabic slogan of "sawf nusaily fi alquds" or "We will pray in Jerusalem". As seen near the city of Maroun Al-Ras in southeastern Lebanon near the Israeli border; c. Feb. 2020. The implication here means that although Jerusalem is currently in Israel, this Palestinian flag promotes their dream of re-accessing some part of Jerusalem (if not all) for inclusion into some future Palestinian state. Muslims may pray today in Jerusalem (al-Quds) such as atop the Haram al-Sharif (Temple Mount), but the city is not currently under Islamic control.

Jerusalem Not For Sale

[Jerusalem Not For Sale flag] image located by William Garrison, 15 March 2024

[Jerusalem Not For Sale flag] image by António Martins-Tuválkin, 15 March 2024

A national flag of Palestine with on the middle white stripe the Arabic slogan "alquds laysat lilbaye" [alquds = Al-Quds = "The Holy" city = Jerusalem] or in English "Jerusalem Not For Sale", as seen atop an archway of the golden "Dome of the Rock" [Qubbat as-Sakhra] atop the Temple Mount" [Haram al-Sharif]; c. 29 April 2022. (credit: AMMAR AWAD/REUTERS).

The "Haram al-Sharif" is located in eastern Jerusalem, and it was controlled by the Muslim-oriented country of Jordan, until the Israeli military captured it during the June 1967 war. Although this area was later annexed/absorbed by Israel, nonetheless, ever since then Muslims desiring a future state of Palestine want this area to be returned to their control. Hence, their slogan: "Jerusalem Not For Sale" to Israel during final peace-settlement negotiations.

This flag is meant to hang vertically, from the hoist, text readable in this position, with the top (black stripe) at the right hand side of the viewer. This flag seems to be somewhat more oblong than the usual 1:2 ratio of unmodified Palestine flags, and the triangle seems to be squatter, but that could be due to a perspective distorsion on the photo. The three words "القدس ليست للبيع" ("alqds list llbiʕ") are set in black letters, each in a separate line, with wide vertical spaces.

The national flag of Palestine with the Arabic slogan of (reading from right-to-left) "# al-Quds __ Lena" which translates into English as "#Al-Quds is Ours". As "Al-Quds" is an Arabic synonym for "Jerusalem", this flag's meaning is essentially: "#Jerusalem belongs to Palestine". [# = "identify a key word" in text messages on social media.] A thin flag-pole sleeve is along the red-triangle hoist side. {There is also a green ribbon attached to this small flag's thin flag-pole which hides part of the red triangle.} [Credit: Ahmad Al-Rubaye]

From the River to the Sea ... Palestine Will Be Free

[Palestine Will Be Free flag] image located by William Garrison, 21 March 2024

The national flag of Palestine with the slogan of "FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA" on the middle white stripe and "PALESTINE WILL BE FREE" on the bottom green stripe, as seen in a New York City, NY street demonstration, c. Dec. 2023. The hoist side is on the left red-triangle side. (photo credit: Eduardo Munoz/Reuters). The overall slogan here expresses some Palestinians' desire that the future independent "State of Palestine" should extend from the Jordan River all the way westward to the Mediterranean Sea - this would mean the incorporation of all of Israel into the future Palestinian state.
