Erlinsbach was formed on 1 January 2006 by the merger of Untererlinsbach and Obererlinsbach (see below).
Besides this there are still two Erlinsbachs, separated by the Erzbach brook, which is also the border between Solothurn and Aargau canton. And it's also a denominational border: Erlinsbach SO is Catholic, Erlinsbach AG is Protestant.
The local conditions are such that the paths taken by churchgoers from these villages ran along the border stream. Every Sunday, the two groups met at this spot – and it is said that things did not always proceed in a calm and civilised manner across the stream.
