With 333,255 km2, this might be the world's largest municipality. I saw the logo in December 2000 for the first time and an image of the flag in November 2002. The sky represents the space and the magnificent aurora borealis in the Nordic sky. The lightning bolts recalls the hydroelectric installations and the green color signifies the forest, taiga and terrestrial fauna. The waves represent the waterways and aquatic fauna. The triangles recall the different origins of the population: autochthonous and allochthonous (i.e., non-native). Finally, in the center, a snowy owl represents this fascinating northern territory rather well. (Note: the snowy owl is also Quebec's official bird emblem).

Baie-James explains the municipal emblem as follows:

· The sky represents vast areas and the splendid Aurora Borealis dancing in our Northern sky.

· The lightning bolts remind of the hydroelectric power stations and the green color reflects our forests, taiga and terrestrial fauna.

· The waves represent the rivers and aquatic fauna which abound.

· The triangles reflect our different cultures, native and non-native.

· Finally, in the center is a Snowy Owl which represents our fascinating Northern Territory.

The James Bay Municipality is characterized by immense areas of land, a dispersed population and its multiple natural resources which constitute the treasure of this large territory. Particularly the rivers, the forests, the mines and of course abundant aquatic and terrestrial fauna. In this large Northern Territory of Quebec, where two cultures intersect ; native and non-native, in an amalgam of tradition and life style, you will undoubtedly discover a paradise for nature lovers.

On January 1, 2014, following an accord signed on July 24, 2012 with the Cree, the government of Québec abolished the local municipality of Baie-James and created the local municipality of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James.
