| When the Civil War ended over a million men were serving in the Union Army. For the rest of their lives they would be Old Soldiers, The Boys in Blue, Veterans. The war lasted four years and has been well-documented. The Veterans' Period lasted for over 75 years and is perhaps the least appreciated segment of our Civil War history. The Grand Army of the Republic was the largest and best known of the Union veterans' organizations with over 80 posts in Maryland. Other national organizations were based on rank, branch of service, or unit affiliation. It functioned on a national, state and local level, with several affiliates including the Sons of Union Veterans and the Woman's Relief Corps. Many of these held national conventions in Baltimore City. Locally there were regimental associations and even company size reunion groups. Finally there was the individual veteran with his membership badge, reunion ribbons, and personal identifications badges. This book gives a brief description of the surprising number of veterans' organizations in Maryland along with their uniforms and medals. Appendices list GAR department commanders, posts, and national encampments. This 8½x11" book, was written by Daniel Carroll Toomey (2004) 64 pages with 80 illustrations. | ||||
