VRCC flag design is a major event that China has never had. I decided to
collect from all over the world, and awarded 30,000 cnyen for the selected
person as a bonus. From November 3rd 2019 to January 7th 2020, 230 manuscripts
were received from 24 provinces from Mainland China, Macao, and the United
States in 66 days.
Due to the dissatisfaction of the first collection, I
put forward creative and design requirements, and did the collection one more
time. Pengfei Zhang completed the design and he received the bonus. The
description of the flag is attached.
The meaning of the flag of
Vexillology Research Center of China (VRCC):
The flag of VRCC’s yellow
and red colour are the same as on the Five-starred Red Flag of China. Yellow
refers to the inheritance of Chinese culture. It means to study and to spread
Chinese banner culture from China to the world.
The moral of the five
red-coloured stars is from an ancient prophecy “Five stars rise in the east,
benefitting China”. Four of them point to the central big one, showing the idea
of cultural cohesion.
The flag with nine fringes derives from the shape
of the character “中”(center) in its oracle bone script form. This conveys the
idea of “the center is where the flag should be” by ancient Chinese people. So
it also represents China's splendid and established banner culture.
Two
nine-fringe flags locate symmetrically on both sides and form the initial letter
“V” from the word “vexillology”. It shows the good hope that VRCC will be an
institution holding the spirit of combination of ancient and modern, the
intersection of the east and the west, and with international perspectives
across times.
