RACINE COUNTY — The county now has an official flag. The Racine County Board on Tuesday approved a blue, gold and gray flag created by the county's Youth in Governance Committee. The design came after committee members spent several weeks interviewing an array of residents and community leaders about their county and poring over possible designs for the flag. The final product features the words "Racine County" on top and the county's founding year, 1836, at the bottom. In the middle are three diamond-shaped blocks representing agriculture, recreation and industry, which came out of committee members' interviews.

"We have what I feel is a very, very important design, very symbolic and contemporary," said Supervisor Monte Osterman, who leads the youth committee.

The flag also features a banner through the blocks with arrows on each end. The arrows show "we are always looking back from the past, learning from our mistakes, and looking into the future, always preparing ourselves for what comes next," said Tom Rees, a Youth in Governance Committee member and senior at Union Grove High School.

The idea of a flag emerged from discussions about the committee's annual "unity project." Members wanted something tangible they could leave behind, Osterman said. Committee members worked with many county officials, from the County Executive's Office to the Sheriff's Office, to produce the final design, Osterman said. "What they've come up with is something we can all be proud of," he said.
