The municipality of Batman (381,990 inhabitants in 2012, 348,963 in the town proper; 56,359 ha) is located in south-eastern Anatolia. As a consequence of the oil boom, the village of Iluh was renamed in 1957 for the local river (Batman) and granted the municipal status.

Flag of Batman

The flag of Batman is yellow (photo, photo) or white (photo) with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem of the municipality represents oil extraction. The discovery of oil deposits near Batman in the 1940s caused an oil boom and a rapid and on-going population growth. The Batı Raman oil field is now the largest oil field in south-eastern Anatolia and Turkey (17 km x 4 km, with an estimated initial reserve of c. 1.85.109 STB).
