Gülüç is the cradle of the famous Osmanli (lit., Ottoman) strawberries,
now honored in the town by a sculpture (photos).
Ottoman strawberry is grown by more than 500 households in Karadeniz Ereğli region. Ottoman strawberry, which has specific taste and smell, has been rumored to be a hybrid of Arnavutköy and Kara cultivars. Arnavutköy, named for a district of Istanbul, directly stems from the first strawberry plants brought to Turkey in the late 18th century.
A phylogenetical analysis performed with RAPD markers revealed that the Ottoman cultivar presents only limited genetic similarity with Arnavutköy (34%) and much more similarity with Kara (68%) and Tüylü (73%).
