Flag of Bolu

The flag of Bolu (photo, photo) is white with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "Belediye Başkanlığı" means "Municipality Presidency".

The emblem of the municipality features the Koroghlu Monument (photo).
Koroghlu is the eponymic hero of an heroic legend prominent in the oral traditions of the Turkic peoples. In the Turkish version, the hero, Köroğlu (lit. "the son of the blind man") struggles for justice and honour against the unfair bey of Bolu. Helped by the mare Kirat, Köroğlu is a bandit-ministrel, who plays saz (a long-necked lute) and challenges his opponent with poems and songs. After the introduction of guns by merchants has transformed the struggle into endless warfare, Köroğlu eventually admits that the old, chivalric world has gone forever, gives up the fight, and disappears.
An English rendition of the Epic of Koroghlu can be read in The Art of the Turkish Tale (Vol. 1, 1990), by Barbara K. Walker.

Abant İzzet Baysal University

AİBÜ (website), established on 3 July 1992, has a unique status among Turkish universities, being a state university supported by a foundation (İzzet Baysal Vakfı, İzzet Baysal Foundation).
AİBÜ is composed of 10 Faculties, 4 Institutes, 6 Schools and 7 Vocational schools.

İzzet Baysal Foundation (website) was established in 1986 by the philanthropist İzzet Baysal (1907-2000).
Baysal started his professional career as an architect at the Bolu Public Works Directorate. In 1943, he moved to İstanbul, where he purchased a small workshop, soon transformed into an industrial foundry. The company he had founded in 1950 became in 1957 İzsal Döküm Sanayi A.Ş., still managed by the founder's family. İzzet Baysal retired from business in 1994 to manage his foundation.

The flag of AİBÜ (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the university's emblem. For whatever reason, the emblem used on the flag differs from the official emblem: on the flag, the letters are sans seriffed.

The emblem consists, at first sight, of three semi- and one quarter circle surrounding the light source in the middle. When looked at more carefully, a human figure from the waist to the top appears: a wise man with arms open like wings, whose head looks like a sun.
The sun-head represents wisdom and dissemination of knowledge; arms looking up symbolize improvement, power, trust and protection. Having more than two arms represents embracing a large mass and great number of topics.
Obstruction below caused by semi-circles is lifted by using quarter circle. The quarter circle abates monotony by eliminating the symmetry of the emblem.
Removal of the upper part of the symbol seeks to create a wide atmosphere with no obstacles, free mind, independence and reaching eternity. Green and blue are Bolu's colors. One of the colors is used for the font and the other for the emblem. A single color was preferred in the emblem to avoid possible ghost effect in printing.
