About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.

Coat of arms

Shield Or, divided by a saltire Azure, in base quarter a millstone Gules, in each other quarter a swallow of Sable and Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "AVELEDA - VILA DO CONDE".
The saltire is alluding to St. Andrew, venerated by the local people. The swallows are representing emigration, a characteristic of the commune. The millwheel is representing the craft of millers, to which many locals belonged in the past.
