Coat of Arms

Shield Or, base wavy of Azure and Argent, above a bridge issuant Gules, above a goshawk impending Maron holding a partridge of the same in his right claw, in chief ordered per fess three berries Vert, probably mulberries (the Portuguese name for blackberries however is the same). Mulberries and blackberries are totally unrelated from a botanical point of view, but their fruit are very similar - accordingly, they are known under the same name in several languages. According to the species, mulberries can be white, red or black. They are, usually, more elongated than blackberries. Here it is impossible to conclude from the heraldic illustration, which is not expected (or even, should not) to represent the berries as they are. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black capitals "VALE DE AÇOR".
Meaning:
The goshawk (Portuguese: açor) is a canting (the name means: valley of goshawk) element, in the past there had been many nests of goshawks in the commune. The berries are representing three trees having been planted in 1914 by children of the local primary school alongside the main street. The bridge is connecting the two parts of the commune. The base refers to a billabong or channel of the Sor River.
