About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Coat of arms

Shield Or, a chestnut tree Vert eradicated fruited Or and flanked in base by two sickles Sable hilted Gules, the tree's crown charged with two keys crossed per saltire, one of them Argent, the other Or. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "CASTANHEIRA - PAREDES DE COURA".
The chestnut tree (Port.: castanheira) is a canting element. The crossed keys are the attribute of St. Peter, the local patron saint. The sickles are taken from the arms of the municipality.

Castanheira Commune is one of the 16 communes of the Paredes de Coura municipality (q.v.); it had 631 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 8.3 km².
