Shield Azure an oak eradicated Argent leafed and fruited Or, flanked by two lozenges Or, in chief a voided cross fleury Argent and in base a barrosã cow head caboshed Proper. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and silver scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "SALTO – MONTALEGRE".
Meaning:
According to Sérgio Horta the lozenges symbolise the local mining for tungsten (Borralha mines), and the cross stands for Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira, who supposedly dwelled here at some point; on the oak the number of leaves, 20, stands for the 20 villages located in this commune, and the 15 acorns symbolise the 15th of August, day of Our Lady of Sorrows, the local Catholic patron. These numbers — 20 leaves and 15 acorns — are not expressed in the official blazon.
