About the Flag

It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a gyronny background (city rank) of green and yellow.

Former Flag (1963-1996)

Mangualde was upgraded to city status on 23 August 1986, town attributes remaining legally on the flag and arms for almost 10 years. The previous version of the arms had an identical shield (the only heraldic difference was the number of towers (4) in the crown), but the flag was plain yellow.
I don't know which flag was used in/by Mangualde during the 10 years between it becoming a city and the official arms and flag reflecting this. The change from 4 to 5 towers is trivial and could be made "avant la loi" (formally illegal, but acceptable in practice) and plain flags, unlike quartered flags, can be used by/for (municipalities seated in) cities, so a plain yellow flag with a five-tower crown is plausible. Alternatively, a gyronny flag may have been devised and used "avant la loi" in 1986-1996, but the second colour (or indeed both) is not a trivial choice: The blazon includes or, vert, argent and sable and any pair of these would be fit for the background. However, perhaps the law of 1996 simply made legal a design already in use. Research is necessary.
