About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Coat of arms

Shield Or with base wavy of Argent and Vert charged with a sperm whale Sable, issuant from base a mountain Vert, in chief three billets Sable. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "FREGUESIA DE LAJES DO PICO".
The base wavy is alluding to the sea and the whale to the local whaling tradition. Lajes do Pico had been the main whaling fulcrum on the Azores since the 18th century. The mountain is representing Mount Pico (Port.: Ponta do Pico), Portugal's highest mountain and name giver of Pico Island and Lajes do Pico commune and municipality.
