The shield is Argent, a 3-mast sailing ship Azure accompanied by an orle of leaves Vert and flowers Gules seeded Or. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "GAFANHA DA NAZARÉ"
Meaning:
The ship is a fishing vessel from 19th century. Fishing of haddock (Portuguese: bacalhau) had been the main business line in the past.

Former Flag

It was like the current flag, but the field was quartered of white and blue and the arms had four visible towers (town rank) instead of currently five.

Gafanha da Nazaré is one of the four communes of Ílhavo Municipality. It had 15 240 inhabitants and covers 16,44 km².
