Presentation of Gouveia

Gouveia is one of the six communes of Municipality created by a merger during the 2013 changes. It had 3150 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 35,46 km². The commune was established as Gouveia United Commune (Portuguese: União das Freguesias de Gouveia (São Pedro e São Julião)) and renamed on 26 August 2014.

Coat of Arms

Shield Purple two keys Or and Argent turned upwards in saltire, in chief an estoile Argent, in base on a fess wavy Argent a barrulet wavy Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "GOUVEIA - S. PEDRO".
Meaning:
As usual in these communes that split a town or city and are named after a fairly common appelation (most often the patron of the correspondent Catholic parish, as of 1844 or even later), disambiguation is done by means of either parenthetical, or hyphenated, or genitive addition of the settlement name — in this case, "Gouveia (São Pedro)" or "São Pedro (Gouveia)" or "São Pedro - Gouveia" or "São Pedro de Gouveia". The latter being the least unwieldy and gramatically sound, although not the form that made it onto the scroll. The crossed keys are an attribute of the saint.
