Presentation of Lixa

Lixa had been a town (Port.: vila) and was elevated to a city by approval on 21 June 1995, published in Diário da República: I Série on 30 August 1995. It consists of the united communes of Macieira da Lixa e Caramos and Vila Cova da Lixa e Borba de Godim .
The main economic activities are: trade, agriculture (e.g. corn, rye, potatoes, onions and various fruit, linen and honey), viticulture (production of "green wine", Portuguese. vinha verde), cattle breeding and industries (textiles, arts and crafts as embroideries of linen and cotton, especially borders, and shoe factories). The latter employs some 30% of the local population.
In 2021 the city had 9686 inhabitants and covered 22,11 km².
Finally it should be mentioned that the city with its two communes forms a metropolitan region together with the additional united communes of Vila Verde e Santão and Freixo de Cima e Freixo de Baixo, the latter belonging to the neighbouring Amarante Municipality.
