Description of flag

The Customs Act 2014 prescribes a Customs flag at Section 8. 'The Customs flag is the Republic flag, with the addition in the fly of the words 'Nauru Customs' in bold characters.'

Customs Flag 1921-1968

Although the Customs Ordinance of 1922 allowed for a Customs flag, no actual flag prescription was known to be made. An Australian(?) Blue Ensign Customs flag with N.C. in white 'under the jack' reportedly flown in the Government launch in 1949 (but discontinued before 1954) was probably a local improvisation by Nauru Customs staff.

This flag was flown when only the Customs Officer was on duty in the Government launch, and a Quarantine ensign ('the blue ensign with the yellow circle under the jack') when the Port Medical Officer was. When procedures changed and these two officers and the Harbourmaster used the launch together, a 'Red Ensign' was flown, presumably the Australian one.
