Blazon: På gull bunn et avrevet bjørnehode i sort.
In English: Or a bear's head erased sable.
Approved by the royal resolution of 16 March 1962 after a drawing by Truls Nygaard. [c2j87]
A bear (Norwegian "bjørn") stands for Arnbjørn Jonsson from Valdisholm, famous warrior of King Håkon Håkonsson, who dead in 1240.
On the other hand an ancient local legend speaks of 12 brothers at Valdisholm, each having "bjørn" in his name. Valdisholm (in local dialect Vallersøy) is an island with remnants of a 13th century castle, in the Glomma river about 1 km south of Vamma waterfall.
