The city emblem is a stylized kanji NAGA 長 and also a star-shaped folded paper crane which represents Nagasaki called as a port of cranes. Inside are five kanji 市 (city) which symbolizes that Nagasaki is one of five open ports appointed in the late Tokugawa period.
