Landsbanki (literally "national bank") also commonly known as Landsbankinn
(literally "the national bank"), formally Landsbanki Íslands hf (English:
Iceland's National Bank) which is now the name of the current rebuilt bank
(called "Nýtt Landsbanki, "New Landsbanki"), was founded in 1885 in Reykjavík by
an Act of the Icelandic parliament and it started operations on July 1, 1886.
From 1927 to 1961 the bank had acted as the Central Bank until it was replaced
by the Seðlabanki Íslands (English: Central Bank of Iceland, official website:
http://sedlabanki.is). The bank had been
state owned and was privatized in stages starting in the autumn of 1997 with the
incorporation of Landsbanki Íslands hf and the process ended when the State sold
a 45.8% holding in Landsbanki to Samson Holding ehf at the end of 2002, a move
which ended in 2003. The bank was one of the largest Icelandic commercial banks
until it went bankrupt in the 2008–2011 Icelandic financial crisis. Landsbankinn
hf (the new bank that emerged from the bankruptcy) was established on October 7,
2008 during its restructuring process and it is commonly referred to as "New
Landsbanki". The bank was then split into two, with a new bank, NBI hf., wholly
owned by the Icelandic state".
