Bistra covers the northern slopes of the Zagreb Mountain (Medvednica); the new ski terrains were arranged in the territory of Bistra to accommodate the ski World Cup and other competitions, putting Bistra on the world maps.

The symbols of Bistra are prescribed by Decision Odluka o donošenju, grba i zastave (Općine Bistra), adopted on 17 October 2002 by the Municipality Assembly.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms of Bistra is "Argent a book bound gules gilded and clasped or ensigned with three apples of the last and in base six gouttes de larmes, three, two and one".
The book refers to the school tradition older than 150 years in Bistra. The apples are attributes of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the municipality. The six blue drops are for the six settlements in the municipalities; they also make the arms canting, the name of the municipality alluding to crystal-clear sources.
