The symbols of Trpinja are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Trpinja, adopted on 9 July 1999 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 2 August 1999 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, No. 7.
The symbols are described in the Municipal Statutes Statut Općine Trpinja, adopted on 15 November 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 2 May 2002 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, No. 5, although they were adopted earlier. This is repeated in the current Municipal Statutes Statut Općine Trpinja, adopted on 7 September 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 13 October 2009 in Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, No. 15 (text).

The process of adoption of the symbols started with Decision Odluka o pokretanju postupka za utvrđivanje grba i zastave Općine Trpinja, adopted on 6 August 1997 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 27 October 1997 in Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, No. 7. A public contest was launched and a two-member commission was set up to supervize the process, including contacting the State Archives.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms in the middle. The height of the coat of arms is prescribed as 2/3 of the flag's width.
