Burgee

Location: Marine Lake, Southport.

Burgee: "The Club adopted the Lancastrian Red Rose as its burgee emblem. However as this closely resembled the Commercial Code flag for the letter ‘C’, the Club soon decided to adopt the ‘Golden Lion’ on a blue burgee. The lion was a direct copy of part of the Lancashire crest."

In 1894, the Commercial Code for the letter 'C' would have been a white pennant bearing a red dot.

Lancaster used the Red rose on a white field; (it was in the early 21st century that Lancashire place the rose on a Gold field to have it registered).

Lloyd's Register of Yachts for 1895-1896 does indeed show a white burgee with the Lancaster rose, the the middle sepal pointing downward.

Concerning the adoption of the ‘Golden Lion’ on a blue burgee, where the lion was a direct copy of part of the Lancashire crest, Lloyd's Register of Yachts for 1896-1897 does indeed show a lion on a blue field. This first year, it's a white lion. It's only in 1897-1898 that the lion turns gold. Whether that's a mistake by Lloyd's or whether there really was an intermediate burgee, the register doesn't tell.
