Coat of Arms:
Shield Gules, a stag’s head caboshed Argent, attired Or, between the horns a cross patty fitchy Or.
Motto:
“SICUT CERVUS ANHELAT AD FONTES AQUARUM” (= As the hart (i.e. stag) panteth after the water brooks), it is referring to the first half sentence of Psalms 42,1; there continued by “so panteth my soul after Thee, O God”
(In German version Ps.42,2)

Hart Hall was founded in 1282 by Elias de Hertford and the arms of Hertford College, were taken from those appearing on the seal of the founder of Hart Hall. The Hall became a part of Exeter until in 1740 an enterprising don succeeded in obtaining a charter making the Hall into an independent College. However, sixty years later there was only one fellow left and as the buildings collapsed the College died until it was resurrected and established by Act of Parliament in 1874.
Magdalen Hall was founded in 1448 by William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester and Lord Chancellor, who later also founded Magdalen College. During the English Civil War, Magdalen Hall was known as a Puritan hall. Among its students was Thomas Hobbes, the famous English politician and philosopher. Magdalen Hall absorbed (the 1st Hertford College, which was dissolved in 1816.

The so called “Bridge of Sighs” is part of Hertford College. The arch displays the Hertford Arms at the left hand side and those of Magdalen (College) at the right hand side. In the centre is a complete different coat of arms, parted per pale, displaying at dexter a stag surrounded by four 6-point stars, and at sinister a quartered shield with to stag’s heads caboshed and two swords(?) in bend within orles.

The ratio is 1:2 .It is a horizontal 5-stripes flag with alternating red and white stripes ((, i.e. the opposite of the 1930 pattern)).
