The municipality of Le Poiré-sur-Vie (8,530 inhabitants in 2018; 7,200 ha) is located north-west of La Roche-sur-Yon.
The town was named for its patron saint, St. Peter. Located on a rocky spur, the parish was originally known as Parochia Sancti Petri super rocam, the Latin name being subsequently transformed to Paire, Payre, and, finally, Poiré.
