Le Mans Métropole (205,113 inhabitants in 2016; 26,710 ha) is composed 19 municipalities.
The Communauté urbaine du Mans (CUM) was established in 1971 by the municipalities of Le MansArnage, La Chapelle-Saint-Aubin, Coulaines, Rouillon, Sargé-lès-le-Mans and Yvré-l'Évêque. Mulsanne joined the community in 2004, which was renamed to Le Mans Métropole the same year. Aigné, Champagné, La Milesse, Ruaudin and Saint-Saturnin joined in 2013, while Chaufour-Notre-Dame, Fay, Trangé, Pruillé-le-Chétif and Saint-Georges-du-Bois joined in 2017.

The flag of the CUM was white with the authority's logo, composed of the acronym CUM in big blue letters and the full name a tthe bottom of the flag, with a reminiscence of the pre-2004 municipal logo; the blue line of the municipal logo is here red, and the sylized "m", wich is red on the municipal logo, is yellow on the logo of the CUM.

Pays du Mans (46 municipalities; 256,000 inhabitants, 815 km2), created in 2002, is an intermunicipal structure (syndicat mixte ouvert - unrestricted public-sector association), gathering five communautés de communes (Portes du Maine, Rives-de-Sarthe, Bocage Cénomans, Sud-Est du Pays manceau, Orée de Bercé-Bélinois), and the communauté urbaine Le Mans Métropole.
