The municipality of L'Aigle (8,019 inhabitants in 2018; 1,802 ha) is located 60 km north-east of Alençon.

L'Aigle (The Eagle), as reported by the English chronicler Orderic Vitalis, was named for an eagle's nest discovered during the construction of the castle. Constable Charles de la Cerda was killed in L'Aigle in the 14th century.
In the early afternoon of 26 April 1803 a meteorite shower of more than 3,000 fragments fell upon the town of L'Aigle. The French Academy of Sciences sent the young scientist Jean-Baptiste Biot to investigate that spectacular fall of stones. After painstaking field work, Biot pointed to the extraterrestrial origin for the stones and gave birth to the science of meteoritics.
