Presentation of Villerupt

Villerupt (21,621 inhabitants, 656 ha) is a commune in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.

Villerupt is watered by the Alzette river which continues its course through the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg before flowing into the Moselle. This commune was a border village with Germany between 1871 and 1919. The German Empire had annexed the part of Lorraine, which corresponds to the current department of Moselle, not only for cultural and linguistic reasons, but also to appropriate the iron ores. Villerupt owes its development to the exploitation of these mines andwas therefore at the centre of an issue which aroused the covetousness of the surrounding nations.
