Presentation of Craon

The municipality of Craon (4,505 inhabitants in 2018; 2,456 ha) is located 30 km south-west of Laval.

Craon was a remarkable fortress in the Middle Ages, consisting of 27 towers and 1,600 meters of city walls, which served to secure the border between France and Brittany. The Lords of Craon were among the first barons of Anjou.
During the 8th Huguenot War (1585–1598), the Battle of Craon took place between 21–24 May 1592, between the French Royal army under the Duke of Montpensier and François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, reinforced by English contingents under Sir John Norreys, against the combined forces of Spain and the Catholic League of France. Craon was besieged by the army of Henry of Navarre, but the defenders, supported by a Catholic relief force recruited by Philippe Emmanuel, Duke of Mercœur, resisted. At the end, Craon was relieved by the Spaniards under Don Juan del Águila, who defeated the Anglo-French besiegers.

Craon Castle, built in the 18th century of white Loire stone, is surrounded by a large French formalgarden and a landscape garden of more than 40 hectares.
