The municipality of Avrillé (14,065 inhabitants in 2018; 1,585 ha) is adjacent (north-west) to Angers.

Avrillé was established n 1129 by Count of Anjou Fulk the Younger, who went on a crusade and donated part of his land to the abbess of Ronceray, authorizing her to create a town, which developed around the St. Giles church. From that time on, and for the first time in Anjou, slates began to be exploited in Avrillé. During the Ancient Regime, the sources of income in Avrillé were slate quarries, wine growing, and "nourishment" (fostering children).
Between January and April 1794, during the Wars in the Vendée, nearly 860 to 3,000 people (men and women) were shot in a place that would soon be called Martyrs' Field, a place of pilgrimage in Anjou. A chapel was built in the 19th century.

In 1939, the architect Ernest Bricard built the Angers-Avrillé aviation school for the Compagnie française d'aviation. The Nazis use this site as a base for the Kriegsmarine and to store their fighter bombers. A military target for the Allied air force, Avrillé was bombed in the summer of 1944.
