Presentation of Villasequilla

The municipality of Villasequilla (2,096 inhabitants in 2018; 7,770 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km east of Toledo, 30 km south-west of Ocaña, and 20 km south-west of Yepes.
The municipality's name was shortened from Villasequilla de Yepes to Villasequilla by Decree No. 27, issued on 20 June 1989 by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha and published on 27 June 1989 in the official gazette of Castilla-La Mancha, No. 28, pp. 1,794-1,795 (text), and on 7 September 1989 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 214, p. 28,491 (text).
The Royal Academy of History validated the request of name change, tabled on 19 December 1987 by the Municipal Council. The addition of "de Yepes" to the place's name was only circumstantial and episodic, reflecting a feudal connection no longer there. Moreover, there is no possibility of confusion with any other Spanish municipality of the same name.
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia 185:2, 395. 1988]

Villasequilla was established in a dry (seco) area, lacking freshwater. The village was formed in 1154, as Villaseca en Valdecarábanos, from the merger of two hamlets, Artal and La Mezquita (lit., the Mosque).
Villasequilla was incorporated to the Council of Toledo, to be transferred to La Guardia, upon the villagers' request, in 1466. Yepes acquired the town in 1573 and would rule it until 1817, when Villasequilla was granted the status of villa.
