"The island of Majorca has been the target of many raids through the
centuries. One of these is remembered on August 2nd each year, when the town
of Pollença celebrates the defeat of a 1550 raid led by a Moorish corsair.
According to local legend, the raid was thwarted by its citizens, Pollencins
armed only with makeshift weapons and led by local man Joan Mas. The annual
celebrations see the town widely decorated with flags, the red and black
quartered flag of Pollença (photo), and a yellow flag with white crescent and moon
representing the raiders (photo). The date of the celebrations is chosen to coincide
with the festival day of town's patron saint, the Mother Of God Of The Angels, rather than the anniversary of the raid.
However, celebration of the battle is very much to the fore, with the
emphasis on spectacle rather than historical accuracy. Cannon and guns are
fired from a neighbouring hilltop, beneath the yellow and white flag, and on
the festival day there are mock battles and swordfights in the narrow paved
streets at the heart of ollença.

Burgee of RCNPP - Image by José Carlos Alegria, 21 November 1999
RCNPP was founded in 1961. One of the members of the first governing board was Baron Dieter von Bach, from Hamburg, Germany; it seems he had a great influence in choosing the flag.
The burgee of RCNPP is a traditional German cross over the Hanseatic red colour, with the royal Spanish crown on a green canton.
