The municipality of La Zarza (3,472 inhabitants in 2019; 6,319 ha; municipal website) is located 90 km est of Badajoz and 30 km south-east of Mérida.

La Zarza was already settled in the Prehistoric times, as evidenced by the schematic rock painting of the La Calderita shelter, the dolmen located on the rod heading to Oliva de Mérida, and the Vase of La Zarza (7th-6th centuries BC kept in the Provincial Archeological Museum of Badajoz.
The modern settlement was established in the middle of the 13th century by Pelay Pérez Correa, Master of the Order of Saint James, incorporated in 1235 to the jurisdiction of Mérida as a hamlet depending on Alange, then known as Zarza de Alange. In the beginning of the 14th century, Alange was made the seat of a Commandery encompassing Villagonzalo, Zarza de Alange, Oliva de Mérida, Palomas, Puebla de la Reina, Puebla de Prior and Ribera del Fresno. In 1566, the Commandery of Alange was reduced to Alange, Zarza de Alange and Villagonzalo.
Zarza de Alange was granted the status of villa in 1589, separating from Alange.

The name of the municipality was changed from Zarza de Alange to La Zarza by Decree No. 24, issued on 20 March 1991 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 2 April 1991 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 24, pp. 639-640 (text), and on 4 December 1991 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 290, p. 39,436 (text).
