Presentation of Llera

TThe municipality of Llera (860 inhabitants in 2018; 7,150 ha; municipal website) is located 110 km south-east of Badajoz and 30 km north of Llerena.

Llera was originally established, according to Ortiz de Thovar, in the 7the century by Visigoths coming from Hornachos. The original settlement was named Gera de Jarandilla because rockrose (jara) grew profusely there, or Gera de los Godos ("of the Visigoths").
Documents from the 16the century name the village as Llera de Hornachos. The tradition says that the village was resettled after the Christian reconquest by Pelayo Pérez Correa, Grand Master of the Order of Saint-James, who built a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Tentudía.
