Presentation of Sanchidrián

The municipality of Sanchidrián (856 inhabitants in 2010; 2,600 ha; official website) is located in the northeast of Ávila Province, on the border with Segovia Province, 30 km of Ávila.

Sanchidrián is the birth place of the musician Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548-1611). Also a priest, Victoria is the most famous polyphonist of the Spanish Renaissance. Sent to Rome in 1567, he might have studied with Palestrina, whom he succeeded in 1573 as maestro of the Roman Seminary; back to Spain in 1586, he was appointed maestro of the Royal convent where Mary of Austria had retired. In 1603, he composed for Mary's funeral his masterpiece, a six-voiced requiem (Officium defunctorum).

Symbols of Sanchidrián

The flag and arms of Sanchidrián (municipal website) are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 10 September 1993 and published on 21 December 1993 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 243 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular, horizontally divided crimson and blue. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms, in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Castile (Gules a castle or port and windows azure), 2. Azure an eagle or, grafted in base vert a spike or, a bordure argent eight music tones sable. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown. The shield surrounded in base with a white scroll charged with the motto "Sanchidrián, Cuna de los Victorias" [Sanchidrián, Cradle of the Victoria] in black letters.

The coat of arms was designed by Basilio Prados Miguelañez. The castle represents Castile. The eagle recalls the local airfield, as a tribute to its founder. The wheat spike is a tribute to the local muleteers who transported grain to Valladolid. The notes and the motto are a tribute to Tomás Luis de Victoria.
