Lichtenau Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, issuant from base an embattled wall Gules, topped by an embattled tower Gules with cone roof, on top of the sinister embattlement a helmet Argent, crested by a swan's neck Azure.
Meaning:
Lichtenau had been the main settlement of the namesake county. It gained city rights in 1300 by King Albrecht I of Habsburg. At the same time the greater seal and the secret seal displayed the crest of the Counts of Lichtenau , i.e. helmet and swan, and a castle, probably alluding to Lichtenau Castle, which had been built in 1296 by Konrad III of Lichtenberg, Bishop of Straßburg. In the 16th century the seals displayed only the swan of Lichtenberg, since 1811 for a short time the greater arms of the Lichtenberg kin. In the 19th century the castle alone was displayed. In 1900 the first pattern was restored and the tinctures were fixed.
