Einbeck was first mentioned as a city in 1203 and its local council was first mentioned in 1252. The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city from 1264 with prints since 1289. Towers and wall are stressing the city rank of Einbeck. The lion is that one on the lion monument of the Welfen kin in Braunschweig. The waves in base are symbolising the Krumme Wasser stream crossing the city. The many additions in the 1970 did not change the arms of the city.
The current arms, based on the first seal, were approved in 1938.
