Lichtenfels Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, issuant from base a rock Argent, flanked by two candlesticks Or with burning candles Argent, in chief a lion passant guardant Or.
Meaning:
Lichtenfels means something like "(tw)o lights on a rock". The first seal, mentioned in 1315 with prints since 1331, displayed candles and rock as punning elements. With minor differences the pattern also appeared on arms since 1526 and on architectural sculptures and coloured paintings since 1603. The basic tincture had been black, the new tinctures are in use since 1811. In 1962 the lion from the family arms of the Counts of Andechs-Meranien was added. They granted city rights to Lichtenfels in 1231 and ruled the city until 1248.
