Description of current flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a 5-stipes flag, horizontally divided by alternating blue and yellow stripes with ratio 1:4:2:4:1. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag.

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue field above blue waves is a golden (= yellow) castle, masoned black. The castle has a wall and three embattled towers, topped by triangular red roofs, each of them topped by a golden (=yellow) ball. The wall is superimposed by a silver (=white) inescutcheon showing a red eagle, armed and tongued golden.
Meaning:
The inescutcheon is symbolizing the Electors of Brandenburg, the former rulers. The castle is symbolizing the fortification of the city in former days and the city rights. The waves are symbolizing waters and swamps formerly surrounding the city.

The flag were approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 17 December 2007, published in the roll of arms of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania as no. 0132, the coat of arms was adopted in 1900 and redesigned in 1997.
